A guide to monitor connections
This guide will help you work with IT to decide which cables you will need to hook up your Extension
monitor and dock. It will cover the possible connections your monitor may have as well as the connections
available on the new docks.
There are traditionally 4 types of video connectors in use in Extension. It is important that we get you
the correct video cables or adapters so that you can hook up your monitor(s).
Since monitors are not replaced nearly as often as computers we have monitors of all shapes and sizes
with different kinds of connections. The new docks from Dell have only two types of connections so it is
possible your monitor does not have those connection types on it.
The Dell WD19 dock has 2 Display port connections and 1 HDMI connection. If your monitor(s) only have VGA or DVI
connections you will need an adapter to convert those connections over to one of the types available on the dock.
We will need to know what types of cables you have coming from your monitor as well as what connection types your
monitor has available on the back. This will help us determine the best cables to send you to hook your monitors up.
We often need to use cables to adapt one type of video connection to another. Below are some of the common adapter types we use in Extension.
