Multifactor Authentication, How to setup Passkeys with Microsoft Authenticator

Passkeys provide a secure and convenient way to sign in using biometrics (face, fingerprint) or a device PIN. Follow these steps to create a passkey.

Please make sure to first have Microsoft Authenticator set up on your phone.  You can follow the directions here, MFA Setup, to install Authenticator.

Step 1: Go to MFA Setup - Open a browser and navigate to https://aka.ms/mfasetup.

Step 2: Sign In - Enter your NetID@illinois.edu, and password.  Then click Next to get to the Duo Push.

Step 3: Access Security Info - On the Security info page, click Add sign-in method.

Step 4: Choose Passkey - In the pop-up, select Passkey in Microsoft Authenticator.

Step 5: Create Passkey in Authenticator - Follow the on-screen instructions:
 Ensure your device has Android 14 or iOS 17 and the latest version of Microsoft Authenticator.In Authenticator, select your University of Illinois account and choose Create a passkey.

Step 6: Verify Passkey - Your Security info page will now show the new passkey method. (You may need to refresh the screen for this to show).

Step 7: Test Passkey Sign-In - Go to a protected resource such as uofi.box.com.  When signing in on the password page, choose Use your face, fingerprint, PIN, or security key instead.

Step 8: Select Passkey - Select your passkey device (e.g., Pixel 6) and complete the sign-in on your phone.

Tips Make sure Microsoft Authenticator is enabled as a passkey provider. If you encounter issues, check that your device OS and Authenticator app are up to date.
