Enabling ProctorU Record+ on Exams in Moodle LTI Courses

ProctorU’s Record+ is an automated proctoring service that allows undergraduate students to take exams online in Moodle LTI without an instructor present by using Guardian browser.

Update for Spring 2026: The previous ProctorU Record+ integration in Canvas and Moodle LTI courses has been replaced with a new version which changes the process for enabling it on an exam. There are now separate instructions for Canvas and Moodle LTI courses. Please also review the note at the bottom of this page regarding an important change to the exam security options in Moodle LTI courses. Please contact CITL for assistance.

Secure your Exams with Record+

ProctorU’s Record+ is an automated proctoring service that allows undergraduate students to take exams online in Moodle LTI without an instructor present by using Guardian browser. This service authenticates their identity as well as monitors and records their computer screen and their webcam’s microphone and video input. It manages certain behaviors during an exam and reports back to you on others so that you can review the recordings to look for any policy violations. There is no fee for students to use Record+, and they do not make an appointment to take an exam that uses it. Please note that some programs, placement tests or courses (particularly for graduate students) may use other platforms, such as Live+ or Review+, which work differently. These instructions do not apply to those.

Get Started with Record+

  • Please contact CITL or for assistance or to schedule a consultation or follow the steps below.
  • Record+ is available for Quizzes in Moodle LTI courses and for both Classic and New Quizzes in Canvas. Setup is different in Canvas courses.
  • If you also use ProctorU in any Canvas-only courses (where you should use Chrome to enable it), then you should use Firefox when setting up exams for Moodle LTI courses. You should not use the same web browser for Canvas courses as Moodle LTI courses.
  • If you do not already have one, you must create a ProctorU account using your Illinois email.

Submit DRES Accommodation Requests

If any students need extended test-taking time, you can accommodate them in Moodle LTI by using the Overrides feature. First, the student(s) must create their ProctorU account by visiting the ProctorU website. Then you must add the name(s) of the student(s) into ProctorU’s system at least 24 hours in advance by using the Accommodations web form. Do this for every student who needs extended time or other accommodations, such as a screen-reader or special equipment. To submit multiple test-takers in bulk, download and use the CSV template provided via the web form.

Configure the Exam Settings in Moodle

Before you can enable ProctorU on an exam, the exam must have the following attributes. Navigate to the quiz in Moodle and press the Settings tab. Check the following sections of the quiz settings:

  • Extra Restrictions on Attempts: You must set a password and be sure that Browser Security is set to None. Never share the password with students. If there is no password, or if you give it to students, they may access the exam without engaging ProctorU and will not be recorded.
  • Common Module Settings: Set the Exam to “available but not shown.”

Create a Corresponding Exam in the ProctorU Site

  • Sign into https://go.proctoru.com/. If you also use ProctorU in any Canvas-only courses (where you should use Chrome), you should use Firefox when setting up exams for Moodle LTI courses. You should not use the same browser for Canvas courses as Moodle LTI courses.
  • Press the Add New button in the upper right corner and choose Exam from the menu.
  • Exam Settings
    • Exam Title: Copy and paste or enter the exact exam name from Moodle.
    • Department: Choose Moodle Exams Record+ Only.
  • Incident Users: Add anyone else who should automatically receive emailed incident reports.
  • Instructors: Add any others who should be able to view and edit the exam and/or any recorded sessions here in ProctorU. They must already have a ProctorU account.
  • Configuration
    • Term: Select the appropriate term (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer).
    • Exam URL: Copy and paste the exact exam URL from Moodle. When copying it, you should only see Moodle in your browser tab, not the Canvas frame around it.
    • Whitelisted URLs: Include the URL of any websites that the students should have access to. They will not be able to access other websites, including the course site, unless you do. Whitelisted URLs will open in a new tab. Please also list these in Other Resources.
    • Exam Password & Confirmation: Enter the exact password you set in Moodle LTI.
    • Template: Skip this.
  • Terms of Services: Skip this.
  • Permitted Resources: Select either “No resources allowed” or choose each appropriate allowed resource. These settings do not prevent students from using any unselected resources, but Record+ should create flags and send incident reports if students don’t follow your choices.
  • Other Resources: Include any whitelisted URLs here, as well as any other resources that were not listed above as available options.
  • Expected Number of Test-takers: Enter how many students you expect to use Record+.
  • Additional Exam Notes: This is only for the proctors who review an exam. Please note that the default text that you see here cannot be deleted or edited.
  • Notify Schedule on Email: If you would like anyone to receive an email when students begin their exams, provide the email address(es) of those who should be notified.
  • Contact Info for Exams: Provide the info for whom ProctorU should contact if they have questions, usually about the exam’s availability, but this is rarely required.
  • Window: This must be at least 60 minutes long. You can have more than one. Each window is the first and last time at which students can start taking the exam. Students don’t schedule appointments so the wording may sound misleading.
    • First Appointment: this time should be the same as the Open date/time in Moodle.
    • Last Appointment: this is different from the Close date/time of the exam in Moodle. You should make the Close time in Moodle be “the Last Appointment time + the Duration of the exam + at least 30-60 minutes (for any necessary troubleshooting).”
    • Example: if you have a 2-hour exam in Moodle set to open at 5 AM and close at 5 PM, then you would want the First Appointment at 5 AM and the Last Appointment time to be 2 PM or 2:30 PM, meaning if they start at 2 PM, they have until 4 PM to finish, leaving them an extra 60 minutes in case they need to work with ProctorU Support on any technical difficulties they encounter when attempting the exam. However, if any of your students have an accommodation for 1.5x or 2x extended time, then you want to set it even earlier than 2 PM to accommodate them.
    • Additional Exam Windows: You can create multiple windows if needed, but they should be at least 60 minutes long. For instance, if you use the user/group overrides to give some students access outside the normal exam time, you can make a corresponding exam window in ProctorU.
  • When finished, press the Submit for Review button. That process may take a little time, but usually if you created the exam at least a few days before the exam is set to happen, it is approved quickly and will then show up on your ProctorU home page.
  • There is no cancel button, so if you don’t wish to save it, simply close the browser tab.

Create a Corresponding URL Resource in Moodle

You must set up quizzes as shown in this article. You will create a URL item that points to the actual URL of the Moodle quiz, the same one used when creating the exam in the ProctorU system. This URL item forces students to open the quiz in a new browser tab, which they must do to engage Record+. They should only see the Moodle frame in the active browser tab, not the Canvas frame around it. This method involves making the actual quiz “available but not shown” to students and adding the URL item that links to the quiz. That URL item should be set to “shown” so students can click on it or to “available but not shown” with text somewhere in your course that hyperlinks to that URL item. Be sure that no other text hyperlinks to the actual exam itself because it won’t force the exam to open in a new tab.

View or Edit Existing Exams in the ProctorU Website

After setting up the exam and enabling Record+, you only need to go to the ProctorU website to revise exam settings or to view the logs or recordings of student sessions. If you make changes in Moodle to the exam title, password, time limit or date availability, including any overrides for students to have late or early access, you must make the same changes in ProctorU.

  • From the Exam Options menu in the upper right corner choose Edit This Exam.
  • Make any necessary changes and then press the Submit for Review button.
  • There is no cancel button, so if you don’t wish to save it, simply close the browser tab.

Find Answers to Common Questions and Concerns

  • Student sessions will be recorded and saved into the ProctorU system. These will be deleted after one year. Read more about how ProctorU uses test-taker data.
  • When a student begins the exam, the ProctorU system will automatically and secretly inject the password on the student’s behalf. The students will never see it and should not know it.
  • Do not issue the access code (password) to students. If they have it, then they are able to take the exam without using ProctorU and without being recorded or monitored.
  • You cannot test the exam in Guardian browser as yourself or by using the Test Student in Moodle because you need to have a valid, linked ProctorU student account to take an exam using ProctorU. If you know the password, you can bypass ProctorU to test the exam in a different browser by manually entering the password.
  • If you look at your exam in the ProctorU system, under the Type column, Record+ exams should be listed as Moodle Exams Record+ Only. If it is not, please contact CITL.
  • Human proctors review all the automated recordings and flags. They create a timeline of flags and generate any reports. These are emailed to you within a couple of days to alert you to any incidents you may want to review.
  • After enabling Record+ you may receive an automated email asking you to review the exam. You can ignore that message or simply review the settings you chose in Canvas. You do not need to visit the ProctorU website or change anything there.

Exam Security Options Change for Spring 2026

Please contact CITL if you have any questions. Previously, when enabling Record+ on exams, instructors determined whether or not the following 4 options were allowed or not allowed on each exam. That is no longer an option in Moodle LTI courses (but is possible in Canvas). The new default settings are:

  1. Allow Copy Text and Image: students are not allowed use of copy/paste and system clipboard, and macOS Content Protection can prevent screen capture.
  2. Allow Use of Browser Tabs: students will be able to open additional browser tabs during an exam; however, if they access any websites that you did not whitelist, then you will receive an incident report and can review the recording.
  3. Third Party Application Use: students will be able to open other computer applications during an exam; however, if they open any applications that you did not list as an available resource, you will receive an incident report and can review the recording.

Set Exam Window Size: students can minimize the browser window to access other resources on the computer in conjunction with the browser and application settings above. If they access anything that you did not list as an available resource, you will receive an incident report and can review the recording.
