U of I Box, Using Box with FTP or FTPS

How do I use Box with an FTP client to bulk transfer files to U of I Box?

Using Box with FTP or FTPS

Box FTP is designed to be used for initial bulk uploading and occasional bulk downloading of files from your account. We do not recommend using FTP as your primary access method.

Please note that Box does not support SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol). Please use FTPS or FTPES for transfers requiring encryption.  File transfers performed via FTP interfaces do not trigger email notifications by design.

Box FTP does not support single sign-on with NetID password, but instead requires using a Box External password. Please see U of I Box, Logging in to Box Services for more information about managing your Box External password.

To access Box's FTP server, please use the following:
  • Server: ftp.box.com
  • Username: [your NetID]@illinois.edu
  • Password: your Box External password
  • Port: 990 for implicit encrypted connection (FTPS), 21 for standard, unencrypted connection (FTP) or explicit encrypted connection (FTPES). Transfers may be slower when using encryption due to additional processing.
  • Please not that Box support Passive FTP, but not Active.
For more information and some troubleshooting steps, please see Using Box with FTP or FTPS and I'm Having Trouble Using FTP with Box on the Box Community site.
