IPAM – Updating CNAME - WWW Record Not Working

If the www. version of your site isn’t working, it may be due to a missing or incorrect CNAME record in IPAM. This guide walks you through updating the record to ensure proper redirection. Be sure to test the link after making changes, and allow time for DNS updates to take effect.
  1. Go to https://ipam.illinois.edu/ui/
    1. Sign in using your SSO login
  2. From the top menu, select Data Management (see referenced photo in 3 below)
  3. In the second row of tabs, click DNS (see referenced photo below)
    1. Screenshot of top menu navigation with Data Managment tab and DNS tab highlighted.
  4. Select default
  5. Under the Zones section, find and select edu
    1. You can also use the search bar on the right-hand side
    2.     Screenshot of search bar on right hand side below navigation
  6. Click the Subzones tab above the list
    1. Screenshot highlighting the records tab and subzones tab within the navigation
  7. Find and select illinois.edu
  8. Use the search bar (see image above under #6) to find the site you're working on
    1. In this example we are looking for DRES
  9. Select the domain (e.g., dres.illinois.edu)
  10. Switch to the Records tab (see image in step 6 above)
  11. Search for www to locate the CNAME record
  12. Click the CNAME record to highlight it, then click the Edit icon
    1. Screenshot of navigation area with the edit button emphasized
  13. In the Alias field, enter: www
  14. In the Canonical Name field, enter your domain without the www
    1. For the DRES example it will look like this - 'dres.illinois.edu'
  15. Click Save & Close

Important Notes:

  • DNS changes may take time to update and the www may not work right away.
  • You may encounter certificate warnings when accessing the site. If prompted, choose “Continue Anyway” or the equivalent option to proceed.
  • Have others test the link to confirm it is working.
