Zoom Recording Guide for Faculty

Use this guide to configure Zoom and record high-quality lecture videos and demonstrations. These instructions are for recording individually (not live meetings).

1. Configure Video Settings (Camera)

  • Open the Zoom app on your computer
  • Click "Settings"
  • Select "Video & Effects"
  • Under "Camera", choose your preferred webcam
  • Check "HD"

2. Configure Audio

  • Go to "Settings" > "Audio"
  • Select "Microphone"
  • Test microphone

3. Configure Recording Settings

  • Go to "Settings" > "Recording"
  • Confirm storage location
  • Turn OFF:
    • Show participants’ names
    • Include timestamp
    • Record video during screen sharing
  • Click "Advanced"

4. Advanced Recording Settings

  • Turn ON “Optimize for third-party video editors”

5. Enable HD Video (Browser)

  • Go to zoom.us/signin
  • "Settings" > "Meeting"
  • Turn ON "Meeting-HD Video Quality"
  • Select "Full HD (1080p)"

 

6. Start Recording

  • Return to the Zoom app
  • Click "New Meeting"

  • Click "More" > "Record"

  • Choose "Record to this computer"

  • Click "Continue"

7. Share Content

  • Click "Share"
  • Select application or device
  • Set "Presenter layout" to "Content only"
  • Click "Share"

To share other devices, such as an iPad:

  • Click "More"
  • Choose your external device
  • Click "Share"

 Best Practices

  • Record camera and content separately
  • Always use "Content only" layout
  • Record to computer (not cloud)
  • Use external microphone
  • Use Speakflow near webcam for eye alignment when teleprompting [click on this link to view Speakflow instructions)
  • Ensure good lighting and camera position
  • Close unnecessary apps
  • Do a short test recording
  • Keep recordings 5–15 minutes
