Wireless @ Illinois, Connecting to IllinoisNet on iOS

Apple's iOS and iPadOS devices can be used to connect to IllinoisNet using a profile provided by the SecureW2 JoinNow configuration website.

Technology Services provides the SecureW2 JoinNow configuration service to make setting up IllinoisNet easy. It will automatically provide the correct network settings and certificates for all recent versions of iOS.

JoinNow needs to make a small download to your device to get started, so these steps will require an internet connection.

If your device does not have a mobile data connection, you can establish a temporary internet connection by way of our Guest network. Follow the steps here: Technology Services Wi-Fi Help Portal - Visitors and Guests

Configuring with SecureW2

  1. Open the Safari browser and navigate to https://go.illinois.edu/WifiSetup
  2. The SecureW2 website will automatically detect the device's operating system, showing an iOS logo and a blue Sign In button:
The SecureW2 site indicating that it has detected an iOS device. The page has a description of the SecureW2 configuration, and a blue "Sign In" button.
  3. Tap the Sign In button. A Microsoft prompt will appear, with University of Illinois branding and a prompt for your email address:
The orange Block I Illinois logo appears above a prompt to Sign in and an "Email address" field.
Enter your Illinois account's email address, tap Next, enter your password, and authenticate with Duo multi-factor authentication if you're prompted.
  4. Once your Microsoft account is accepted, Safari will ask to download a configuration profile (and possibly which device it should be installed on):
Safari warns that the site is trying to download a configuration profile; choose Allow. iPhones with other devices connected to them may be asked where to install the profile; choose iPhone.
Choose Allow to download the profile, and, if asked, choose iPhone (or whichever device you're configuring wifi on). Safari will show a success screen, asking you to review the profile in Settings:
Safari indicates that it has downloaded the profile, and asks to have it reviewed in Settings.
  5. Open the Settings app, and locate the Profile Downloaded section that has appeared above the networks section (Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi, Cellular, etc.):
The Settings app now has a "Profile Downloaded" section above the other network settings.
  6. Tap on Profile Downloaded to be shown details about the networks and certificates that SecureW2 has provided. Tap Install in the upper-right corner, then Install again at the Warning screen about certificates:
Settings shows the details of the networks and certificates being set up by the configuration profile; tap Install in the right corner. Settings may warn about installing trust certificates; tap Install again.
  7. Once done, Settings will show a Profile Installed confirmation screen indicating that setup is finished:
Settings shows a confirmation screen indicating that the profile has been installed. The device should now connect to IllinoisNet.

The device will now 'forget' the Guest network and automatically join IllinoisNet anywhere it's seen on campus.

Having Trouble?

Other configuration profiles, or old copies of the IllinoisNet profile, may interfere with this process. To check for these, open Settings, tap in to the General section, and look for VPN & Device Management towards the bottom. This screen will list any other configuration profiles set up on your device; remove anything to do with IllinoisNet, and try the above steps again.

If removing configuration profiles and following the steps again doesn't connect the device to IllinoisNet, contact the Technology Services Help Desk by email at consult@illinois.edu or by phone at 217-244-7000 for further help.
