Audio Visual Equipment in the Teaching Labs

• Presentation technology:
  • NEC flat screen TV
  • iPad (TA presentation device)
  • HDMI cable w/Lightning port adapter
  • Wireless lavalier microphone
• iCard scanning station
  • Mac Mini
  • USB magnetic card reader
• Proster Rechargeable Walkie Talkie

Order of operations for using the presentation technology:

1. Turn on / wake up the iPad on the center console
2. Turn the system "On" using the wall plate near the TV
3. Get the Microphone, and press the button to unmute it. 

1. Turn on / wake up the iPad on the center console

• Use the home button to wake up the display.
• Confirm the HDMI adapter is connected to the iPad

2. Turn the System On

• Press the "On" button on the wall unit near the TV - the "ON" button should light up
• The iPad should appear on the TV within a few seconds - if it does not, see "Troubleshooting" below

2a. Using another HDMI device (alternative to using the resident iPad)

If you need to use a different device, such as a laptop: 

• Disconnect the HDMI cable (the blue cable in the top image) from the iPad adapter.
• Connect your device using the resident HDMI cable.
• If your device requires a USB C connection ask the TA for an adapter. There are many available at the 1026 office.

After use, please be sure to reconnect the HDMI cable to the resident iPad's adapter.

3. Get the microphone

• Open the technology cabinet
• Remove the microphone from the base station, and wait 5-10 seconds for it to connect
• Press the button on the front of the body pack, and the light on top of the body pack will turn green.  
• Talk! 
• Press the button on the front of the body pack to re-mute yourself - the light will turn red when muted.

Troubleshooting

The technology in the instructional labs is designed to be as simple possible, so there are only a few things to try. 

If the iPad doesn't show up on the TV:

1. Be sure the wall plate has the "ON" button illuminated - if not, press the "ON" button to turn the system on
    
2. If the wall plate has the "ON" button illuminated: 
   1. Press the "OFF" button on the wall plate
   2. Remove the adapter from the iPad, wait 3-5 seconds and plug it back in
   3. Press the "ON" button on the wall plate and be sure it is illuminated

If the microphone doesn't make sound

1. Be sure that the light on the microphone body pack is green.  If it's red, you're muted, so press the button on the front
2. Be sure the wall plate has the "ON" button illuminated - if not, press the "ON" button to turn the system on

Getting students to sign in with their I-Card

1. Wake the computer up.  
   • Moving the mouse often doesn't do it - you'll need to press a key on the keyboard
   • If the computer still doesn't wake up, be sure that the keyboard switch is set to "ON"
2. Log into the computer 
3. Click on the "Attendance" icon - this should be in the middle of the screen
4. Log into the ATLAS Attendance app and choose the course and section
5. Set the keyboard switch to "OFF" - this prevents students from simply typing their (or their friend's) NetID
6. Students need to swipe their I-Card with the stripe facing them, from right to left.  They'll forget, even though there's instructions right next to the card reader.
7. At :06 on the even hours (8:06am, 10:06am, 12:06pm, 2:06pm, 4:06pm and 6:06pm), Safari should quit automatically. 
   • If you see Safari still running at :10 after the hour, let SCS Computing know - use the GroupMe or email scs-computing@illinois.edu.

Using the Walkie-Talkie

1. Pick up the walkie-talkie and be sure it's turned on
2. Be sure that the walkie-talkie is tuned to Channel 11 - as you move the channel selector, it will announce the channel
3. To talk:  Press the "Talk" button to talk - this is the black button on the side of the walkie-talkie, just above the 2 orange buttons
4. To listen: When you're done speaking, release the "Talk" button
