Teams, Caller ID, Presence, and Privacy Features
What happened to Privacy Relationships in Skype for Business?
The privacy relationship feature from Skype does not exist in Microsoft Teams.
Individuals I call from teams see my Caller ID as Unknown Caller or otherwise does not represent an incoming University call in a meaningful way to correctly identify us as the University.
Caller ID is handled by the carrier for the call recipient. Generally, companies partner with a third party database to handle caller ID info, and often this information is out of date. This partner can be different for each telecom company, which leads to different results depending on who you're calling. Our provider, Lumen, has provided us this link for further information: https://www.ustelecom.org/the-industry-traceback-group-itg/call-labeling-and-blocking-points-of-contact/
Why is my status not correctly reflecting my actual status?
Every now and then my current status is inaccurate (ex. Away when attending and presenting in a meeting)
This is a known issue if Teams is not up to date: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/troubleshoot/teams-im-presence/presence-not-show-actual-status
You can manually update Teams at any time by clicking the ellipsis icon on the top bar of your Teams client and clicking Check for updates.
If your computer is managed by end point management and manually checking for updates fail please reach out to your Unit IT for support.
Another possibility is that you have accepted a Vacation day meeting from a coworker that extends to All Day. This will set your presence to “In A Meeting” for the entire work day. You must manually set your presence in this scenario.
Additionally Teams presence in Outlook is only supported on the Outlook 2013 desktop app and later.
Blocking Outside Calls
You can block outside callers (external to the University). Some call history is required to make this possible with the new Teams client; either you have received or placed a call related to the number/contact you wish to block.
From Teams > Calls > History locate an incident of the caller you wish to block, hover your mouse cursor over that record, click on the ellipsis (…) and from the drop-down menu choose “Block”. You should see an indicator related to the blocked status. You can unblock the number using the same method.
You can also block all calls that do not have caller ID. In your Teams settings click on the Privacy tab then check the box for ‘Block calls with no caller ID’. You can also see and manage your blocked callers there.
People Within the University Teams System
People within the University's Teams system can be 'Muted’ so you do not receive notifications from them. They cannot be formally blocked. Note: This is not a University policy but the way Teams for Work and School is designed.
Privacy Mode
By default, when your presence in Teams is set to Do Not Disturb, Teams suppresses all notifications and incoming calls from notifying you unless a user is on your priority access list.
To setup your priority access list: You can access the Manage priority access feature by clicking on your picture in the top right corner, select Settings > Privacy > Manage priority access.
Then search for the name or number to add to your list. Once added these users will be able to contact you when in Do Not Disturb.
