MFA, How to Create a Temporary Access Pass (TAP) in Microsoft Entra ID

A Temporary Access Pass (TAP) is a time-limited passcode that allows users to sign in without their password or strong authentication methods. TAP is useful for onboarding new users and recovering accounts.

If you do not have an option for authentication, you may need to contact the Tech Services Help Desk for assistance by emailing consult@illinois.edu.
The Help Desk will set up a zoom meeting with you to verify your identity.

TAP is used for Account recovery when MFA is unavailable.

Once you have verified your identity with the Help Desk, you will be given a TAP (Temp Access Pass) to follow the directions below:

Steps to Sign In Using TAP

  1. Go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com or your organization's sign-in page.

  1. Enter your username.

  1. When prompted for password, select Sign in with Temporary Access Pass.

  1. Enter the TAP provided by your administrator.

  1. Complete any additional setup (e.g., register MFA or passwordless methods).

Shape Important Notes

-TAP is time-limited and expires after the configured duration.
- Treat TAP like a password—do not share it via insecure channels.
- If TAP expires before use, contact the Help Desk for a new one.
