SSL Certificate Errors, Invalid or Expired

Some common errors show up as a result of problems with SSL certificates. SSL certificates help verify the authenticity of websites you visit, as well as enabling the encryption behind HTTPS. These certificates have expiration dates that are checked against the current date and time that your device displays.

Common Errors

While browsing the web, you may run into the following errors:

  • "SEC_ERROR_OCSP_OLD_RESPONSE"
  • "ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID"
  • "SEC_ERROR_EXPIRED_CERTIFICATE"
  • "SEC_ERROR_OCSP_FUTURE_RESPONSE"

Your device may not recognize SSL certificates as valid if the date and time on your device is not set correctly. This can cause the errors listed above while surfing the web, cause Wi-Fi to refuse a connection to your device, or prevent your device from connecting to the campus VPN.

Resolution

Confirm that your device is using the correct date and time. This varies depending on the type of device you're using, but most operating systems have an option to automatically synchronize the date and time with an internet time provider somewhere within the system settings.

Windows 10/11

  1. Click the Start menu, then select Settings (Gear Icon).
  2. Select Time & Language.
  3. Click Sync now to force your device to sync the time and date with an online time server.

macOS

  1. Click on the Apple menu in the top left corner of the screen, then System Settings.
  2. Click General from the list of available settings.
  3. Click Date & Time.
  4. Confirm Set time and date automatically is on. If it's already on, you may need to turn it off first, then turn it back on.

iOS

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to General , then select Date & Time.
  3. Confirm Set Automatically is switched on. If it's already on, you may need to turn it off first, then turn it back on.

Android

The Android settings menu varies from device to device, sometimes substantially. To find the date and time settings, use the search bar in the settings app to look for "date and time", then confirm the setting to automatically set the time is enabled. If it's already on, you may need to turn it off first, then turn it back on.
