NetID Center, Steps After Receiving Password Reset Token

These are the steps to reset your password after receiving a password reset token from the Technology Services Help Desk. If you are not able to reset your password from the NetID center, please contact the Help Desk by email at consult@illinois.edu, or by phone at 217-244-7000. Once you reset your password, there is a delay of up to 20 minutes before your new password will start working as it syncs across all Illinois services. Additionally, you will need to log back in to any services that have saved your password and update any saved passwords in your web browser or password manager.

Step 1: Receive a Reset Token From the Help Desk

Our Help Desk consultants can send a password reset token to your registered recovery options as either an email or an SMS text message. If you have no registered recovery settings, the Help Desk can also set new ones for you if we're able to verify your identity.

Email Password Reset Token

You'll receive an automated message from noreply@uillinois.edu with a few brief instructions and 2 links:

Click on either of the identity.uillinois.edu URLs and proceed to step 2. If one link does not work, try the other.

SMS Text Message Password Reset Token

You'll receive an automated message from Illinois with an 8-digit number and a link:

Click the link or copy it into a web browser on your computer, then proceed to step 2. If the link does not work, the 8-digit number can be entered at https://go.illinois.ed/reset.

Step 2: Authenticate and Review Your Recovery Settings

If you have Duo 2-factor authentication set up on your account, you'll be asked to authenticate:

Once you pass the 2-factor authentication screen successfully, you will be asked to review your recovery settings. Please ensure that you have access to both the recovery email and phone number, as it makes it much easier to recover your account in the future if you need to reset your password.

If your recovery settings are correct, click This is correct. If you need to change your recovery settings or add a new one, click Let me update this info.

Step 3: Set a New Password

After reviewing your recovery options, you'll be taken to a screen where you can set a new password for your account:

After clicking Set Password, you'll be taken to a screen telling you that you've successfully changed your password. It will also tell you when your new password will expire. There will also be a link to return to the NetID Center, where you can manage your password, Duo 2FA settings, and account recovery settings.

Step 4: You're done!

your new password is valid

If you reach a message saying you've successfully changed your password, you're done! The new password should propagate out to all Illinois websites and services within 20 minutes. You'll likely be signed out of most Illinois services automatically, and you'll need to use the new password you just set to get back into them. This includes the IllinoisNet Wi-Fi - if you have trouble logging in or find your account getting locked out frequently after changing your password, have all of your devices forget the campus internet (IllinoisNet, IllinoisNet_Guest, and eduroam) and then rejoin it with the new password.

If you have any problems using your new password, please contact the Technology Services Help Desk by email at consult@illinois.edu or by phone at 217-244-7000.
