Teams, IP Phone Installation and Login
Power
Most IP phones can be powered using Power over Ethernet (PoE). PoE provides power from the building network equipment via the Ethernet cable which connects to the IP Phone. Campus fully supports PoE across the majority of the network switches on campus. IT Pros can enable or disable PoE using the Iris Network Management Tool (see below under "Network switch configuration").
Network Support
It is recommended that IP phones should be on their own VLAN, called the Voice VLAN (network). Using a Voice VLAN has the following benefits:
- Traffic separation so IP phones don't receive broadcast traffic from building networks.
- IP phones are on a private, campus IPv4 space, this not using routable IPv4 from building networks.
- DHCP options required for IP phones won't conflict with departmental DHCP options.
Network switch configuration:
- Login to Iris. You will need read/write access to the network. See Networking, Iris, Who Can Use Iris? for information on access to Iris.
- Check to make sure the voice network is available on the switch. Go to Iris | Switch View | Patch Cords and you should see a column named "Voice". The Voice column will be available only on switches that have a voice network configured. IT Pros can also enable or disable PoE from this interface.
- Add the voice network to a port by selecting the Voice checkbox. Selecting the checkbox leaves the port on the existing departmental network. When an IP phone is plugged in, the phone gets an IP address on the voice network based on LLDP transactions between the phone and the switch. When any other device is plugged in to the port, it will communicate on the department network. When a device is plugged into the IP Phone via a "PC" or "LAN" port, the device will communicate on the department network.
- Important and Required: Enter or verify the Jack that the switch port is plugged into. This is required for E911 location. See Networking, Iris Scenarios: Working with Jacks for information on working with Jacks. Port-to-Jack mapping requirement is outlined in the Low Voltage Media Installation policy in the Campus Administrative Manual.
IP Phone Firmware Updates
Once the phone is provisioned on the Voice network, it may automatically download firmware updates. No IT Pro or User intervention is required.
Logging In to the Phone
Once the user is logged on to the phone, the device will remember the user's authentication info. They should not need to re-login unless the phone is reset.
User Sign-on method
1) Sign in using the web
Your device should automatically come up to a screen with steps to get you signed in via the web.
Step 1 – One your computer or mobile, go to https://microsoft.com/devicelogin
Step 2 - Enter the code below to sign in.
-
- The code will be on your IP Phone screen. If it has expired, you will see a button that says "Refresh code". Click it to get a new code.
2) Sign in directly on the device
Below the web login steps, your phone should say “Sign in on this device”. Tap on that line to start the sign in process directly on the phone. The phone will present an on screen keyboard to use during the sign in process, but you can plug in a USB keyboard if that is easier.
