NetID Claim, How to Claim for Students
For students, the NetID claim process begins with your UIN and an activation code given to you by University Admissions or the Graduate College.
- Undergraduate students: Once you've accepted your admission in MyIllini, your activation code can be found in the admitted student checklist.
- Graduate students: Your UIN and activation code and be found on your Graduate College application status page.
If you are not a student, you have a different method of claiming your NetID:
- Staff (including Extra Help): Staff members claim their NetID via the New Hire website. Please see this article for more information: NetID Claim, Employees, UI New Hire.
- University Affiliates: Affiliates claim their NetID via a different website. Please see this article for more information: NetID Claim, How to claim a NetID as an Affiliate.
Please note: the below screenshots were collected from the undergraduate claim process; formatting and available options may differ slightly depending on your account's type.
Navigate to the NetID Claim website at netidclaim.illinois.edu

Enter your activation code.
You may be prompted to use your NetID recovery options if you have set them before.
Students will be shown a welcome screen, displaying the NetID you're are about to claim:
You will now be asked to set recovery options to use if you need to reset your password. Once you have finished entering at least one password recovery option, click "Continue".
North American (Canada, Mexico, US) should NOT be entered with a preceding country code of 1. Enter your phone number as: (000) 000-0000.
International phone numbers should be accepted with the appropriate country code.If your number is still not accepted, click "Logout" in the upper-right corner of the site, then log back in with the same NetID and activation code. The 'invalid phone number' error usually only occurs the first time you log into the claim website.
Next, set a password for your account. The requirements will be checked as you type; see Identity Management, Requirements for Acceptable Passwords.
The final screen will confirm that you have successfully completed the NetID claim process. You will need to also set up 2-factor authentication at the NetID Center in order to access your email account.
