How to create a New Standard Assignment in Turnitin LTI 1.3

With the upgrade to Turnitin LTI 1.3, you have the option to select and create a New Standard Assignment (Read about the differences between assignment types in the following article: Canvas@Illinois, Turnitin, Assignment Types in LTI 1.3). Read on for instructions on how to create a New Standard Assignment.

  1. Click the "Assignments" link in the course navigation menu.
  2. Click the three vertical dots button to the right of the "+Assignment" button.
  3. Select "Turnitin" from the dropdown menu.

  4. Click the "Try Now" button in the upper section of the window where it reads "A new version of the Standard Assignment is available."

  5. Click on New Standard Assignment.

  6. From the "Assignment Details" tab, enter the following:
    Title
    Instructions
    Optional: Template upload--templates are text that is excluded from an originality scan. Students can download templates, as well.
    Start date
    Due date
    Feedback release date
    Max points--decimal points are allowed
    Optional: Hide student details for anonymous grading
    Optional: Attach rubric--clicking this will take you to the Rubrics tab
    Allow late submissions
    Allow resubmissions until due date
    Allow submission of any file type
  7. Before clicking "Create Assignment," click the Rubric tab, if you would like to add a rubric to your assignment.
  8. To attach a rubric to the assignment, select an existing rubric from "My Rubrics" or the built-in "Turnitin Rubrics," or create a new rubric.

  9. Click the "Report Settings" tab to edit the assignment report details. 
  10. Decide whether you want submissions added to the campus Turnitin resource database by selecting from the buttons under "Store submissions for comparison."
  11. Choose the sources you want submissions compared against by checking the boxes under "Compare submissions."
  12. Choose when to generate the originality reports under "Generate report."
  13. Decide if you would like students to have access to the generated reports under "Report access" (recommended if you wish to use the reports as a teaching tool).
  14. Select any "Exclusions."

  15. Once you are satisfied with the settings for the assignment, click the "Create Assignment" button.
