Electronic Directory, Errors While Changing Forwarding Settings

When changing your email forwarding settings in the Electronic Directory Editor (EDE), you may encounter an error if you don't specify the correct email domain.

The mail field in the Electronic Directory Editor (EDE) will not accept email addresses with the @illinois.edu domain. For mail to be successfully delivered to your Illinois Outlook email, enter your email as NetID@mx.uillinois.edu.

  • For example, if your NetID is test123, set you email forwarding settings to test123@mx.uillinois.edu.

Attempting to set your EDE mail forwarding to an email address with the @illinois.edu domain will result in the following error:

The edit to field email has FAILED. The email field is used to tell the campus mail system where to send mail addressed to NetID@uiuc.edu or NetID@illinois.edu. You cannot set your email address to point to "NetID@uiuc.edu" or "NetID@illinois.edu". Please use a more specific delivery address.

Note: If you make changes to your EDE settings, it will take up to 4 hours to take effect. Emails sent during this update time will not be delivered as expected.

Faculty and staff can no longer redirect or auto-forward their Illinois email. For more information, please see Privacy & Cybersecurity, Faculty and Staff Email Auto-forwarding Retirement FAQ.
