Canvas@Illinois, Upgrade McGraw Hill Connect integration to LTI 1.3

Learn how to upgrade your McGraw Hill Connect assignments in Canvas to LTI 1.3.

On August 5, 2026, the McGraw Hill Connect integration in Canvas will be upgraded to LTI 1.3. You will see this labeled as "McGraw Hill LTI 1.3" and it can be activated by enabling the item in your course navigation menu. This is a necessary upgrade to bring the integration to the current standard for these tools. The vendor (McGraw Hill) has created a helpful migration process which makes this upgrade relatively seamless, especially if the upgrade is done before there are student submissions.

The upgraded LTI 1.3 version should be used in most Fall 2026 courses (unless students have already completed some work). The older McGraw Hill Connect 1.1 tool will remain available during the Fall semester but will be removed before Spring 2027.

Migration process overview

The migration process to upgrade your Connect assignments from LTI 1.1 to 1.3 will be different based on where you are with your current course:

  • Course is paired and has LTI 1.1 assignment links: Your course will be migrated to LTI 1.3. You do not need to unpair your course because the migration tool will automatically unpair it after successfully migrating your course.

  • Course is not paired but has LTI 1.1 assignment links: The migration tool will ask you to select a Connect section to pair and migrate to LTI 1.3. Once a Connect section is selected, the migration process will look similar.

  • Course is paired, has LTI 1.1 assignment links, and contains student activity (at least one student has started an assignment): The migration workflow will not be initiated because you do not want to migrate an active course. The workaround here is to unpair your 1.1 course and then pair it using LTI 1.3. When pairing, the migration tool will be initiated.

For additional information, see the Connect Canvas Migration Tool documentation from the vendor. Please note that McGraw Hill's documentation will refer to the LTI as "McGraw Hill Connect LTIA" but this is called "McGraw Hill LTI 1.3" at Illinois.

Enable the new "McGraw Hill LTI 1.3" link in course navigation menu

To enable the new LTI in your course site, you'll need to add it in your course navigation menu with the following steps:

  1. In your course navigation menu, select Settings.

  2. Select the Navigation tab.

  3. Scroll to the bottom section and locate the item called "McGraw Hill LTI 1.3". Drag and drop the item to the top "available" section (or select the 3 dots and choose Enable from the drop down menu).

  4. Select the Save button to save your changes.

Once you have finished pairing your course and confirm that the new integration is working, it's recommended that you disable the old LTI 1.1 link (called "McGraw-Hill Connect") from your course menu.

Disable LTI 1.1 tool from course navigation menu

After successfully upgrading to LTI 1.3, you should disable the old LTI 1.1 link (called "McGraw-Hill Connect") from your course navigation menu by following these steps:

  1. In your course navigation menu, select Settings.

  2. Select the Navigation tab.

  3. Disable the item called McGraw-Hill Connect by dragging and dropping the box to the bottom section or select the 3 dots and choose Disable from the drop down menu.

  4. Select the Save button to save your changes.

Common issues

Below are the most common reasons that your assignment(s) may not successfully migrate/update to the new version:

  • Your Canvas assignment name and the Connect assignment name do not match. The migration tool updates assignments based on their names, so a mismatch in names will result in the assignment not being migrated. You will need to delete the assignment from Canvas and redeploy it post-migration.
  • Your Connect assignment is in hidden state. Please unhide the assignment in Connect and then perform relinking.
  • Your Connect assignment is in an unassigned state. Please assign the assignment in Connect and then perform relinking.
  • You have deleted the assignment in Canvas but not in Connect. You will need to delete the assignment in Connect.
  • You have deleted the assignment in Connect but not in Canvas. You will need to delete the assignment in Canvas.
