Canvas@Illinois , Space Types
Before you request a Canvas@Illinois Space
Review the definitions of the various course types below to be sure you order the appropriate space for your needs. If you have questions or would like to speak with a consultant before ordering your space please contact consult@illinois.edu.

Registrar-Affiliated Course Space
For sites affiliated with University courses that are tracked by the Office of the Registrar. These courses must have rosters selected (from Banner data) for automatic student enrollment.
To request a Registrar-Affiliated space you will need the following information:
- Your NetID and password and the NetID of the space owner
- The start and end terms of the course
- The rubrics which should be loaded into the course space
- The title and term for the course you want to copy into your new space (if applicable)
- You can manually import course content from previous terms by following the steps in this document: Canvas, Copying select content from one course to another (uillinois.edu)
Open Learning Course Space
For sites not affiliated with University courses. Open Learning course spaces may be used for conferences, outreach education, and other University activities. Automated rosters are not available for these course sites; however, one-time batch roster loads can be arranged by request.
To request an Open Learning space you will need the following information:
- Your NetID and password and the NetID of the space owner
- The start and end dates of the course (if applicable)
- Your unit and department
- The title you would like to use for your course space
- The title and term for the course you want to copy into your new space (if applicable)
- Following space creation of your non-registrar-affiliated course, you can generate a self-enroll URL (from within the course) which can be sent to interested members.
Training Space
For spaces used primarily for training purposes. Training course spaces may be used to train faculty, staff, or students on a particular function or role. For example, a training course space may be used to train all lab staff or to train all new users of Canvas.
- Your NetID and password and the NetID of the space owner
- The start and end dates of the training space (if applicable)
- Your unit and department
- The title you would like to use for your training space
- Following space creation of your non-registrar-affiliated course, you can generate a self-enroll URL (from within the course) which can be sent to interested members.
Development Space
For development and test purposes. Development course spaces can be used to develop course content, quizzes, etc. for courses that have not yet been scheduled or to test tools before introducing them into a live course. The contents of a Development course space can be copied to a Registrar-Affiliated course space in the future.

- Your unit and department
- The title you would like to use for your development space
- The title and term for the course you want to copy into your new space (if applicable)
- Following space creation of your non-registrar-affiliated course, you can generate a self-enroll URL (from within the course) which can be sent to interested members.
Collaboration Space
These spaces can be used for collaboration in committees, workgroups, study groups, registered student organizations, and other University groups. No rosters will be uploaded into collaboration spaces.
- Your NetID and password and the NetID of the space owner
- Your unit and department
- The title of your collaboration space
- Following space creation of your non-registrar-affiliated course, you can generate a self-enroll URL (from within the course) which can be sent to interested members.
Research Space
These spaces can be used for online communication, sharing files, and other tasks involving undergraduate, graduate and faculty research projects. No rosters will be uploaded into research spaces.
