Canvas@Illinois, Adding a Teacher to a Previous Course

Due to restrictions in Canvas, Teachers cannot add users beyond the end date of a course or term; however, the Canvas Support & Operations teams in Technology Services can help share your materials. Learn more about what's needed to share your course materials.

Scenario 1: Instructor only needs to access the course material 

This option is for instructors who would like to share the content (not student grades or submissions) with another instructor. 

  1. Request a Development Canvas course site with the Space Request Application (SRA) at https://go.illinois.edu/sra  

  1. Once the Canvas site is made, add user(s) to the course as a Teacher. See the How Do I Add Users to a Course guide.  

  1. Copy your previous Canvas course by following the steps in the How Do I Copy Content from Another Canvas Course Using the Course Import Tool guide.  

Note: Teachers in any Canvas course can copy that course (either the entire course or select content) into other courses they teach. See resources below for more information: 

Scenario 2: Another instructor needs access to a previous course to review student grades and/or submissions 

Contact the IT Service Desk at consult@illinois.edu and provide the following information:

  • The full course name
  • A link to the course
  • NetID of the person who should be added to the course
  • Specify that the support request should be routed to Canvas Operations for fulfillment

If you are not the instructor of the course, the Canvas Support & Operations teams will need to see clear approval from the department or unit head to add another person to the course. This can be done by adding the department head as an additional contact on the ticket so they can reply with their approval.

Scenario 3: Previous instructor left the university and materials need to be shared with the new instructor

To copy materials from a previous offering that was taught by an instructor who is no longer at the university, you'll need permission from the department or unit head and the Canvas Support & Operations team can assist with copying the actual course content. The new instructor or the department head should contact the IT Service Desk at consult@illinois.edu and provide the following information:

  • The full course name
  • A link to the course site (if available)
  • Semester that the course was offered
  • Name and/or NetID of the previous instructor
  • NetID of the new instructor

Note: If the new instructor submits the request to the IT Service Desk, the Canvas Support & Operations team will also need to see clear approval from the department or unit head. This can be done by adding the department head on the ticket as an additional contact so they can respond to the ticket and approve the course copy.
